Kabu

Meet Kabu

August 10, 2016

This is a photograph I took of a female elephant named Kabu currently living at Elephant Nature Park. Kabu was born in a small village where she was used for logging. When she was young, she followed her working mother into the forest and a log fell on Kabu and broke her left forelimb. The leg was never properly set, and as a result, Kabu's leg "healed" with a permanent bend. Even with her deformed limb, loggers continued to subject her to grueling work. Over time, Kabu's healthy forelimb began to weaken as it compensated for her damaged forelimb. Eventually, she could hardly walk.

In 2015, the founder of Elephant Nature Park, Lek Chailert, traveled to the small village to save Kabu, and brought her to the elephant sanctuary where she could  live the rest of her life freely and in peace. Despite years of abuse from the village she grew up in, Elephant Nature Park has successfully rehabilitated her mental state and allowed her body much needed rest. Kabu has a wonderful temperament and greets many visitors at her home, the Elephant Nature Park.

Purchase a print of Kabu and I'll donate proceeds to elephant nature park

7 Pieces of Film Gear that Complimented my Photography in 2020

Whose idea was 2020? What a horrible, volatile year. Aside from the obvious, we kicked off 2020 with increased film prices and ended it with a farewell to the Nikon F6 product line. So here's the gear that made my 2020 a little more bearable.

When I think of Yousuf Karsh, I think of monumental portraits that belong in both museums and history books. Karsh documented the most powerful, popular, and culturally relevant icons of the 20th century.
